Disney Cruise Tips & Tricks: What I Learned on the Disney Wish
If you’re getting ready for a Disney Cruise — this post is for you!
After experiencing it myself, I came home with plenty of tips, small lessons, and “I wish I’d known that” moments that can make your cruise smoother and even more magical. I’ve also mixed in advice from other seasoned Disney cruisers to give you a well-rounded list of practical tips and insider insights.
Whether it’s your first cruise or your fifth, here’s everything you should know before you set sail!

🧭 Before You Sail: Getting Ready
1. Get familiar with the app
Download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app ahead of time and explore how it works. Watching a short screen-share video tutorial can help you learn where to find things like your dining rotation, daily activities, and chat features once you’re onboard. Here’s a link to a screen-share video of the app that I took onboard: Disney Cruise App Walkthrough | Learn the Navigator App Before You Sail.
👉 Once you board, connect to the ship’s WiFi, open the app, and add everyone in your travel party to the cruise chat so you can message each other easily throughout the trip.
2. Check-in early for the best boarding time
Online check-in opens 30 days before your cruise — do it right away! Early check-ins often get earlier boarding times, which means more time to explore and relax before the ship sails.
3. Plan key reservations in advance
If you’re hoping to enjoy an adult dinner, a spa treatment, or a beverage tasting, book these as soon as your booking window opens. Popular experiences fill fast. If you are unable to grab a reservation before you sail, you can check with Guest Services once you’re onboard to see if any extra spots have opened.
4. Pack a “carry-on essentials” bag
Your checked luggage may not arrive at your stateroom until later in the afternoon. Keep these in your carry-on:
- Swimsuit and sunscreen
- Medications and valuables
- A change of clothes
- Travel documents and passports
- A charger (USB hub or multi-plug — outlets are limited)
If you want to hit the pool early, wear your swimsuit under your clothes when you board!

5. Driving to port? Drop off, tag, and tip.
If you’re driving, drop everyone (and luggage) off right at the terminal before parking. Make sure your Disney luggage tags are already attached — porters will take your checked bags from there. A $2–$5 tip per bag is standard. Keep your carry-on bag with you since you won’t see your stateroom until around 1:30–2:00 p.m.
6. Expect busy lunch crowds
Once you’re onboard, you’ll go through security, check in, and then be free to explore. Most guests head straight to the buffet for lunch — it will be crowded, so be prepared!
If you prefer a calmer start, ask a crew member if any of the sit-down restaurants are serving lunch and head there.
7. Explore the ship before it sails
Take this time to walk around, peek into the kids’ clubs and spa during their open house hours, and get familiar with the layout. I also recommend checking the Navigator app for the day’s activities so you don’t miss anything fun — and each night, I’d review the next day’s schedule to plan ahead. Make sure your notifications are turned on for the Navigator app!

⚓️ Making the Most of Your Cruise
8. Get to know your dining rotation
Disney’s rotational dining means you’ll visit a different themed restaurant each night (with the same serving team following you). You can see your rotation in the app once onboard — perfect for planning outfits or special evenings!
9. Attend the live shows
Arrive about 20 minutes early for main stage shows to get great seats. They’re Broadway-quality and a highlight of the cruise! If you have the early dinner seating, you can catch the later show — and vice versa.
10. Pirate Night & fireworks
Don’t miss this themed evening! The atmosphere is festive — you’ll see everything from pirate bandanas to full costumes!
11. Use the app daily
The Navigator app is your best friend onboard. It lists everything happening each day — trivia, crafts, character meet-and-greets, movies, and more. Tap the heart icon to “favorite” anything you want to attend, and the app will remind you when it’s time.
12. Kids’ clubs
If you’re cruising with kids, register them early for the Oceaneer Club. The themed spaces are incredible, and kids typically love it — meaning parents can sneak in some spa time, a cocktail, or trivia guilt-free.

🏖️ Port Days & Castaway Cay
13. Don’t over plan your beach day
If your sailing includes Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay, Disney’s private islands, arrive early to snag a great beach spot — but don’t feel like you need to book too many excursions. Sometimes the best plan is just enjoying the beach, BBQ lunch, and relaxed island vibe.
For Disney Wish cruises, some travelers even stay onboard during the Nassau port day to enjoy a quieter ship and shorter lines for attractions.
14. Bring your beach gear
A waterproof bag, sunscreen, goggles and a change of clothes make port days easier. I recommend bringing your own snorkel as well if that’s something you’re interested in. Disney provides towels as you disembark, but it’s nice to have your own essentials handy.

🧳 Disembarkation Day: Smooth Sailing Home
15. Choose your exit plan
The night before you disembark, you’ll receive luggage tags. You can:
- Check your bags: Place them in the hallway before 10 p.m. and pick them up in the terminal the next morning.
- Express Walk-Off: Keep your bags with you and disembark at your own pace.
We had a noon flight home and chose express walk-off — it was quick and stress-free.
16. Check the app for updates
Disney will populate your disembarkation information in the app the day before you leave. Read through it carefully to make sure you know your assigned breakfast time and exit details.
